Our Mission
Basyl Lab is an artificial cognition research and product company. We exist to protect society and the environment from the limitations of today’s AI—and to build a more sustainable and responsible AI future.
While artificial intelligence has advanced dramatically, its cognitive limitations remain critical. The gap between what AI does and what we expect it to do has widened faster than most realize, creating mounting risk for individuals, organizations, and worldwide ecosystems alike. We founded Basyl Lab to close that gap.
By putting artificial cognition (ACo) at the heart of AI systems, we aim to redefine the building blocks of artificial intelligence to ensure a safer and more sustainable foundation for the next era of technology.
Our Guiding Principle
Though cognition and intelligence are often conflated, they are fundamentally distinct. Cognition is the foundational processes of aquiring knowledge. Intelligence is the application of that knowledge in purposeful action. They are deeply intertwined, but must be considered separately and developed in tandem.
Our work centers around defending our assertion in code, including building a foundational toolkit from these next-generation frameworks and developing ACo models.
Contributing to AI
Modern AI systems are fundamentally incapable of advanced, real-world cognition. Yet they are deployed in critical systems, marketed as capable beyond humans, and entrusted with decisions beyond their design.
This disconnect poses ethical, social, and environmental dangers that compound as adoption accelerates. That's why we see ACo as a both a technical frontier and a moral imperative.
Cognitively based AI systems promise:
- More efficient architecture, reducing AI’s resource and carbon footprint.
- More trustworthy systems, transparent in reasoning and behavior.
- More human-aligned intelligence, capable of ethical inference, nuanced contextual understanding, working memory, etc.
AI must become responsible and sustainable if it is to remain compatible with the world’s long-term future.
ACo as a Shared Endeavor
We believe progress in artificial cognition must not be a corporate trade secret but a scientific standard shared across the global research community.
We aim to publish our studies, frameworks, and findings to accelerate collective understanding of ACo. Open collaboration with researchers and developers will be essential to moving ACo toward its goals and AI beyond its limitations.
Basyl Lab is currently assembling its founding team of scientists, engineers, and builders with backgrounds spanning machine learning, cognitive science and neuroscience, policy, ethics, product, and systems design.
We’re looking for audacious individuals ready to build the foundational architecture for cognition in code, and to redefine what AI can become for humanity.
